He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8
I was listening to 1 Corinthians this morning on my dramatized audiobook version of the Bible and was reminded to the importance that we're to aim to pursue a life of living love. In our culture today, we're quick to forget that love is an action as well as a feeling. And we're trained to seek after the emotion of love and how good it feels, only to harshly be reminded that emotions wax, wane, and can be fleeting.
Love is a verb requiring that we "walk the walk" while "talking the talk." Speak kind words to others. Build people up. Don't be so quick to expose and get others told on social media. Offer a bum some change every now and then. Give a ride to a not so liked associate on occasion. Go out of your way to make sure that a relationship stays intact even though you'd like to cut it off. Be quick to forgive. Don't hold grudges, bitterness, and unforgiveness in your heart. Use your G_d given gifts to build up others verses for selfish means and ends. Chase a life that seeks to full-fill the lives of others, versus living with an attitude of "to hell with everybody else!"
God is love, and the only thing that he asks of His creation is that we love Him, and love others as we love ourselves. We're admonished to live for the edification of humanity, to always seek for the reconciliation and unity in relationships, and be upstanding examples of Kingdom work. When we love him, we seek to meet His standards of right living while letting the abundant joy, contentment, and charity spill over into the lives of others. In looking at the world around us this clearly is not the case.
In glancing over the headlines of the day, social media, and other propagandized media outlets, it's clear to me that we live in a culture that pushes messages of fear, worry, anxiousness, anger, sexual immorality, and death. It seems as though whenever I randomly turn on my television I'm bombarded with stories and images depicting situations and circumstances about so and so got shot, there's a fire over here, so and so robbed her grandma, the economy is down, food prices are going up, gas is creeping up this week, inflation is going up, there's a war over here, people are overweight and out of shape, there is no G_d, you can have sex with whomever you want to whenever you feel like without regard for morality or responsibility because truth is relative, etc. This is not what living in love looks like, and when we accept Christ as our Salvation, we're pressed to seek living in opposition to the patterns, ways, and culture of this world.
The world in which we live is anti-love, and we must remember this as we go about our daily business. The world is at war with a mob of malevolent beings that seek to crush humanity due to the fact we're made in G_d's image, and it's essential that we "awake" to this fact in order to make wise decisions with regard to how we live our lives, love our families, and work in our communities.
In short, in loving G_d, pursue being a living example of The Divine Creator's love in every area of the human experience possible. Thank love, feel and give love, physically show love through your body, and stay connected to the infinite source of love. May the grace of Jesus be with you always!
