In a world where the emphasis of eating is placed on pleasure and convenience rather then nutritional value, the concept of eating to live can seem foreign. Everyday millions of people pull into their favorite drive-thru, dine-in at their favorite restaurant, or browse the isles of their local grocery looking for foods that will bring them the maximal amount of pleasure involving the least amount of painful preparation. We have been trained to seek foods that bring us euphoric pleasure hitting all the right taste buds, but are low or empty in nutritional value at the expense of our health. The fast food industry continues to be a growing industry raking in billions of dollars each year! There seems to be no end to chicken joints, burger castles, and pancake houses! Bigger is touted as being better with sandwiches and meals pushing the caloric envelope to the edge of sanity, but offer nothing by way of good nutrition! There's the "Big Size Burger" over here! There's the Mega-Big Size burger over there! But wait, we got the Mega-big-humongonormous-bigger-than-yo-mama's-rearend-death burger right here! These are nothing more than designer meals that are produced for maximal pleasure making you feel good, thus ensuring that you keep coming back for more. Americans are overfed, but undernourished. A lifestyle of consuming such meals erodes the foundation of our health setting the stage for a health crisis down the road. The solution to avoiding a health crisis like cancer, diabetes, or heart disease is to consume foods that God created to be eaten in a form that's healthy for the body. In addition, it means focusing on eating foods that are nutrient dense as opposed to how they make you feel in the short term.
Eating to live means eating foods that God created while in a form that's healthy for the body. It means eating as close to "natural" as possible from God's approved food list. It means the less of a process a food goes through from farm to dinner table the better. The term "natural" has been hijacked, and muddied by Big-agriculture and the FDA, but here, we mean natural as in what you may find in nature. It means consuming foods in their most basic form free of additives, alterations, or fillers. For example, the word natural is placed on products such as potato chips and applesauce, but you won't find either in my garden. You'd be better off consuming a potato or an apple instead. Likewise, an orange pulled directly from an orange tree is natural and called a food by God's standard, but not in its best form after being processed into orange juice. Again, you'd be better eating the orange instead.
Secondly, eating to live means eating foods from God's approved food categories found in Deuteronomy 14 and Leviticus 11. Now I know I'm at risk for having a few tomatoes lobbed my way, but friends, the truth of the matter is that God has never altered or changed his list of approved foods for consumption. There are many scientific studies that affirm the wisdom found in the God approved food categories. We will discuss some of these studies in later articles. God has always been involved in man's diet since the beginning of time. Given that He created this beautiful bio-mechanical machine called a body, I believe that He knows best as to how to fuel it.
Lastly, eating to live means we want to eat foods that are highest in nutrient density. These are known as super foods. Foods like kale, collard greens, mustard greens, avocados, spinach, and cacao are examples of what are known as super foods. These are foods that are high in the nutrients our bodies need to function at optimal levels. One can never consume to many nutrients. It does a body good. Focusing on nutrient density is an easy and simple way of ensuring that you're getting all the right stuff into your body. Nutrient density ranges from 1000 to 1 with the higher number being the most nutrient dense. Thus, all one has to do is focus on eating foods in the higher number range. Simple, yet effective!
In short, eating to live means eating foods from God's approved food list in a form that is healthy for the body, while placing emphasis on nutrient density. It will result in a healthier you that will enable you to live a life full of energy and vitality!
