It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell. James 3:5-6 (The Message)
Have you ever been cut deep by the words from someone to you or about you? It may have been a friend, a family member or a complete stranger, but you can never erase those piercing phases from your mind. Years may have past, but it still gives you anxiety and sick to your stomach as you recall those circumstances. Why? I mean, you clearly have moved on with your life. You’re happier now, successful and living life fully. But it still hurts to this day upon reflection. Here is one resolve;
You've Been Burnt!
I’ve been working on cars for nearly a decade now, and my arms can affirm that truth. Many days of changing oil filters beside hot manifolds and exhausts have contributed to many “metal tattoos”. Some have faded with sun exposure but many remain apparent and highly visible. Why? Because burns are damaging and can be permanent without alternative intervention. Also, burns can become infected and can be very painful.
In the same manner words can be very damaging and painful. Infections come from us never fully dealing with the hurt. There are times we either try to prove people wrong and miss out on other viable areas of our lives. Some simply accept those statements and act as such, while others bury those adverse words and pretend they has gone away. Without completely dealing with these issues they will eventually come to surface. Through prayer and seeking God, He can free us of past deep rooted suffering.
(And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself) James 3:5-6 NLT
How many “dragons” have you encountered in your life? Better yet, how many people have YOU burnt? The Bible is very clear that our tongue is the hardest member to tame. It takes a close walk with Christ and daily spiritual building to increase Godly thinking. Why is it important that our temples’ remain clean? Jesus sums it up in Luke 6:45, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (NIV)
Let’s put out the fire of unfavorable communication with the “living water of Christ” (John 7:38). When we become full of Christ, He’ll “quench” our past hurt and burns. He in turn will give us a mind renewed to speak life into others.
